Dharmadam

Andalur Kavu Theyyam, a well-known festival held in Dharmadam village in the Kannur district, is a celebration of a wonderful culture that combines everyday life with legends from the past. In a place where the locals fervently observe the traditional and sacred practises throughout the season, the celebration is a visual spectacle.

Over 10 Theyyams based on the fabled epic Ramayana are performed here over the course of the festival, which lasts for seven days in the second week of February. Some of the Theyyams performed here are Daivathar Theyyam (which symbolises Lord Rama), Bappuran Theyyam (which represents Lord Hanuman), Angakkaran Theyyam (which represents Lord Lakshmana), and Athiraalarvum Makkalum (which depicts Goddess Sita and her twins Lava and Kusha).

The kavu is significant because it houses two holy places: Mele Kavu (upper temple), which is thought to have been constructed by Sage Parasurama (the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu), and Thazhe Kavu (lower temple). It is one of the few shrines in the Malabar region where the Yuddha Kanda of the epic Ramayana is envisioned and performed. The principal deities are Rama, Lakshmana, and Hanuman.
